The same reasons that compel anyone to do them in the first place. The source doesn't really matter - books, movies, cartoons, music videos- the point is that characters are designed to emulate real people, so you can sympathize (i.e. relate)with them. When you get real people relating to fictional characters, in can be good in some ways (though there are downsides, like the hentai and slash.) There are all kinds of examples of this, right here in the SK community. Take for instance the multiple duscussions about "who's cuter"? I'm sure we have a fanatic or two amongst them. There are also katsfans who just HATE Cmmr. Feral. The hentai stuff is the same sort of reaction- the only problem is, in today's society, almost anything relating to sex, libido, etc, is seen as taboo- a no-no. Something you're not supposed to talk about (and that not too long ago, most people weren't even supposed to LIKE.) So the only difference between the people who say "Callie is the cutest!" and the ones who draw erotic pictures of Callie, is the fact that they're just identifying with her in a different way. As long as human beings are having sex, there are going to be things like porn movies, Playboy, and hentai art (even based on cartoon shows.) The other problem you have with saying "this stuff should not exist" is that it tramples all over the other person's rights. Who are you to say what they can and cannot draw or write? It's their imagination- they can do what they want with it. It's their website- they can put whatever they want on it. You can't kick them off the internet just because you don't like them. If you don't like what they have on their site, then don't go to it. A responsible pageowner will have a warning on their page that says "this page contains erotic...." etc. When it comes down to moral stuff, you are the only one who has control over what you want to see. No one's going to cater their websites to you. Every now and then you are going to come across an unpleasant little surprise like you did at Aviar's site, but that's something you're going to have to live with. The erotic artists and writers are merely expressing themselves- YOU are the one who is using your words to oppress THEM. As I said before- that sort of stuff is your own personal choice. I am not a fan of it. I have banned that sort of art from my Fan Art Page. But, I don't hold anyone else's tastes against them. It's a free country. So, that's fine if you don't like it. That's fine if you get other people to say that they don't like it, either. But it's not OK to attack the erotic artists and writers publicly (aka on this mailing list) and tell them that they're sick and that their artworks and writings shouldn't even exist. One thing I'm worried about with this topic is that this is another example of how hard it will be to 'police' the Internet to protect everyone who may need it. With all the legistation floating around on regulating the 'Net perhaps it falls to all of us to police ourselves. It is, of course, going to fall to each person with a web site on what they're going to have on it and if they are going to post warnings for possible offensive material. But if those with sites with sexual based themes provide adquate (again, a hard to quantify term I know) warnings, then it falls up to the surfer and any parents involved to make an informed decision. That way everyone is covered. What really worries me is that we can not let ourselves forget that all have different tastes. Those with henti/sexual art or fanfic are expressing themselves in the way that they see the SK universe. A way that's no more 'right' or 'wrong' than another. The arts have been having this same fight for decades and no resolution is in sight. This is really no different. What each of us needs to do is remember that if a site has something that upsets us, we have the ability to ignore it, take it off a bookmark, etc. I don't have a website (nor could I make on if Feral had a blaster at my head either..) but I do surf a lot and while there's sites (not just SK but other mythoses) I myself ignore, I try to keep in mind that they put a lot of work into it, and they at least should be respected for their effort. The content and if it's viewed is up to each of us. Maybe we all need to remember we're all connected by the wonderful show called Swat Kats. By art, fanfic or poem we're each trying to keep a great show that was cut before it's time a second chance (no pun intented) at life. I agree that people should have the right to write what they want, draw what they want and post it where they want (so long as there are appropriate warnings, etc) IF they're using their own characters. When you start using others creations for this sort of thing, you're stepping away from "Freedom of Speech" and into Copyright infringement. Considering what's happened to others, when they've done web sites dedicated to their fave tv shows, or whatever, we should all be giving thanks that we're even allowed to do web pages with the SWATKats (or any other characters for that matter). I believe that several other authors have followed suit and adopted the name of "David" as well. Me, being the renegade that I am, have decided to call him "Jeff" for the purposes of my fan-fiction. Someday, I'll actually finish that massive epic of mine. 2. I have never seen any indication in the series that she-kats have retractable claws. Every shot that I have seen show fixed and feminine nails. 3.
