I'll say. They became a big hit in Japan a few years ago, sorta the equivalent to the "Cabbage Patch" or "Tickle Me Elmo" insanities that strike the U.S. every few years. Looks like http://www.swatkats.com is still down; or rather, the site is there, but neither of my web browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape) have been able to find any data on the site. Kat vids: I recently created an AVI clip which I called "planz.avi" (you figure out what that one's about ;-) but I've been reluctant to put it on an FTP site because the file is *big*. For a roughly 40-second stereo clip, the file is something like 3.11 megs (it'd be 30 megs if I didn't lower the video quality). Ideally, I'd like to convert the entire file to an MPEG one, which supposedly takes up far less disk space than an AVI. It'd also be an easier way for me to create a few SK music videos. ;-) (I'm just not sure if I want to shell out the $150 or so it would cost to get AVI to MPEG conversion software.) I *can* send or upload the AVI file upon request, but be warned that uploading could take a while. ------------------------------ From: Claudio Matsuoka Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 22:52:34 -0300 Subject: Callie picture This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------43EE352F3DC8B34E7F8A0D25 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit A few days ago I tried to get a Callie Briggs picture (662x810 GIF image) from two different sources and it was corrupted in both sites. On one of the mucks I had created a Commander Feral puppet. Later I got a friend to play the commander's role for a while, and the puppet was then renamed to "Ensign Extra". Ensign Extra's job? You guessed it... to be the one ensign that gets blown up, stomped on, and so on and so forth. The other day I was leafing through a handbook on some basic legal advice (Reader's Digest's "You And The Law" -- hardly a law book, but interesting nonetheless) and came across something interesting. Many life insurance companies (at least in the U.S.) will insert wartime clauses in their policies protecting them in case the insured is killed while serving in the armed forces. I wonder what type of coverage (if any!) insurers in Megakat City would provide the Enforcers... Claudio Matsuoka: >> Clean version? I think I'm getting these bad habits from the linux-kernel list (100 messages/day and some huge patches in some of them). Talking in bandwidth, just imagine the bandwidth used by Hard Drive -- Megakat City comms lines should be really _fast_! Why don't they install firewalls in the important sites anyway? (In some episodes it seems that Hard Drive use analog transmission over power lines instead of digital data lines. But again, some kind of noise filter should keep him out.) > Funny thing is I thought Adler also voiced Rocko, but I don't know who > does. There's a list of Adler's works at http://voices.fuzzy.com/actor.idc?actor_id=21. I tried to contact the server now but one of the routers of the university is down. One thing to think about: if a guy owns heavy weapons and some other guy use these weapons to kill hundreds, maybe thousands of innocent civilians, shouldn't the weapons owner get some responsibility for this? Suppose you stock missiles in your home and an evil guys goes there and use them to destroy the city, what would happen to you? :) And (sorry for the heretic question - I didn't see all the episodes and this can be answered elsewhere) where Chance and Jake get the money to maintain the Turbokat and its load of weapons? Only the fuel should cost a fortune (although it seems to work with anything - volcano gases for instance). A very sophisticated VTOL jet fighter should cost much more than the Enforcers HQ damage for instance. Is the car fixing business that profitable? (Or maybe... oh, no, it can't be! At Licensing 97 Bandai was showing a variety of accessories for tamagotchi, one of which was a carrying case. For a Tamagotchi Enforcer (TM) we'd have to have a chopper the tama could sit in. At some random time the tama could activate a spring-loaded piston in the chopper, causing the latter to leap off whatever surface it's on and crash to the floor, just like a real Enforcer chopper. I didn't have to design anything, but there was a good deal > of wrenching and checking clearances and tolerances. In this case, 2 engines * 5 days per engine / 2 kats = 5 days. We know that it runs on anything, so fuel will not be a problem ("The Pastmaster Always Rings Twice"). State-of-art materials are not required to build the plane structure - technology available in the Dark Ages is enough to build up the wings and body ("Bride Of The Pastmaster"). Keeping the systems as simple as possible reduces maintenance and any damage can be fixed in few hours, even in hostile environment, only with a toolbox ("Chaos in Crystal"). Additional bells and whistles could come from the milspec hardware discarded by the Enforcers, who are not very smart and would never be able to build a plane to face the Turbokat. Perhaps we should add one day of work in the engines, considering that the Turbokat probably does not use standard VW engines. Proof is simple, VW engines don't accept any fuel you put in it. > I imagine building something as sophisticated as the Turbokat would > take a year or two of constant work, assuming Razor is an Aerospace > Engineer somewhere among his many specialities. This is quite possible, given that Razor was able to fix Dr. Greenbox's mining machine (a device totally unfamiliar to him) in a few minutes. The computing paraphernalia should be very cheap, considering that they are a bit more technologically advanced than us. This seems to explain it all. Pretty simple, eh? :) Next question is... do the kats *really* have bones in their ears? ("The Pastmaster Always Rings Twice"). (A TCN cartoon thing we'd like to see: "The cartoon thing do do today is: How to put junk parts together to build your ultimate VTOL supersonic aircraft thing!") ------------------------------ From: Dana Uehara Date: Thu, 03 Jul 1997 09:30:48 -0700 Subject: Jake and Chance's Garage > Well, if you're having someone do the work for you, and you blow an > engine, it will be pretty darn profitable. One problem with that, though. Commander Feral sent Jake and Chance to manage the salvage yard to pay the cost of rebuilding the Enforcer building. The building sustained heavy damage when the pair, as Enforcers, were chasing Dark Kat (see "The Wrath of Dark Kat"). I'd say their income would hardly be enough to turn a major profit if most of it went to pay the commander. > If they hold the monopoly of the business in Megakat City, the job would > be _very_ profitable indeed. What the extra scrap would do, more than likely, is provide adequate material for Jake and Chance to find spare parts to repair the Turbokat, maintain its hangar and repair Callie's car, not to mention replacing personal items (like getting a spare TV and a replacement engine for Callie's car in "The Giant Bacteria"). > Also, if they built their jet, and had a bunch of milspec hardware at > their disposal, I suppose it could be a bit more affordable. See the ep "The Wrath of Dark Kat" plus my comments above. > I imagine building something as sophisticated as the Turbokat would > take a year or two of constant work, assuming Razor is an Aerospace > Engineer somewhere among his many specialities. I'd say Razor has some kind of engineering background, although I'm inclined to believe mechanical engineering because of his interest in gadgets. Not only does he make and repair them (how much do you want to bet he did most of the navigation and weapons systems in the Turbokat?), but he's also been interested in others' creations, such as Professor Hackle's Cybertron (cf. "The Deadly Pyramid"). > do the kats *really* have bones in their ears? ("The Pastmaster Always > Rings Twice"). Ears are made of cartilage, if I'm not mistaken. The skeletons in "Pastmaster..." as well as "Caverns of Horror" thus shouldn't show ears (cartilage, I believe, decomposes rather quickly). Then why are the skeletons drawn with ears? Well... how else would you know they were kats? They'd otherwise look like human skeletons with tails. I'm just wondering if Feral might use their money for other purposes, seeing that T-Bone and Razor are at his disposal, and they have to be there for a VERY long time, so why wouldn't he just happen to make the money dissappear into other departments or maybe, even his own pocket. We can't really tell at all what he does with it. Many just assume he uses it for a good cause. But when you "assume", you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me"!! Ah! Mabye there's a weird cycle going on here! Assuming (there's that word again! CRUD! Oh well!) that my above statement is true... First, the Enforcers lose parts, giving the SWAT Kats more recources, saving them money only to have it taken away to guive it to Feral for Feral's own purposes! As if he didn't have a big enough payroll! Well, never assume. That's what I say... well... I say, but I don't follow it! >See the ep "The Wrath of Dark Kat" plus my comments above. An example, I'm not exactly ordinary (more like every bit of my personaliaty puts me in one minority group or another), and yet, I can carry on a conversation with somebody with one or more of my likes or dislikes or other personaliaty quirks. I think I went pretty well on this list a year ago. Anybody remember the Pastmaster? No?! Oh, forget it! Well, I think... mabye Razor and Hackle go really well together in the show because they share at least one intrest or hobbey. I'm not good at this stuff because people in the real world reject me. For a few weeks I have lived and breathed the SWAT Kats. I watched the show or I read the fan fiction or wrote it. I role-played or I worked on my page or toured someone elses... I guess the kats' determination rubbed off. That or I'm stubborn. :-) I think we've established that we want the SWAT Kats back. We've also established that a good first step would be to change the time slot. No one has really said which time slot. So...which one? I was thinking that if we concentrated our efforts - and flooded a certain mailbox with our letters - someone would have to take notice. What address should we target first? We could set a date on which we actually send off our letters - imagine 100 or more (I can garentee I'll convince a dozen others to write a letter for me) letters arriving in the mailbox at the same time! LET'S BEGIN BATTLE PLANS NOW!!! Team efforts are usually rewarded with success, and we are a team, right? THIS CONCLUDES MY STAND ON MY SOAPBOX...beeeeeeep! We tried to campaign thing with letters and calls back when the show was originally cancelled, and all the old producers and artists were still working for H-B. This type of campaign does work, at the right time, with the right amount of people. I'd like to say I was one of the 4,000 fans responsible for bringing seaQuest back for two more seasons past the first (and sadly, the second two sucked). Let's face reality : we don't have 4,000 fans on this list. PLAN TWO: 1. Get my book published! There's a few SWAT Kat references in my book, and if I can get it accepted I'll put a lot about it in the introduction ("Want to read more stuff my me? Go to my SWAT Kat archive!") So are any of you editors at publishing companies?! 2. Buy my book! Make it a bestseller and another million people who wouldn't have read it otherwise will read it. Dr. Jake _______________________________________________________ Get Private Web-Based Email Free http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: "DJ Clawson" Date: Thu, 10 Jul 1997 19:22:58 PDT Subject: Fan Fiction Archive News I haven't been on the soapbox for a while, so bear with me, guys. The archive has been active for about 7 months now (my math brain is on vacation), and people who haven't seen it yet should *really* check it out! A thousand hits a month, and some 150 stories! I just want to give a round of applause to all the writers out there for submitting! 1. OTHER ARCHIVES Here's a problem. I'm not again other people's freedom to post their work elsewhere. I just want to know about it. There's something called "mass centralization" that's *very* important when trying to keep a fandom community together. I'm really trying to maintain one site where you can find *everything*, unlike other poorly-organized fandom communuties (ex : Highlander and X-Files) where fans have to pick through each to find the stories the other didn't have. It's a pain in the butt. If you've got your own page, that's great. But I still want your stories, please! This also leads to my next topic: 2. REJECTED WORK I like to keep an open mind. I permit erotica, slash, and other things I don't personally care for (genre-wise) because I know I can't represent the tastes of the entire community. But some things are offensive to certain groups or mature subjects not handled well that are simply not appropriate fandom. (see the guidelines available on the site for details) A few different rejected authors have turned to putting up their own work -- the unedited versions, or just stuff I couldn't bare to put up -- on their own sites. Again, see my note about decentralization of the archive. If you guys want, I can add notes to their authors with rejected stories -- saying they have their own stories not on my archive and if you *really* want them, you can e-mail them. But I won't put them up. I need your opinions, please! 3. OFF-TOPIC FAN FICTION I've been getting a lot of it. Here's a list of things accepted as SWAT Kat fanfiction: 1. Actually about the SWAT Kats. 2. About a major character other than the SWAT Kats. 3. About a minor character from the show other than the SWAT Kats. 4. About a new character created by the author who has a lot of contact with the SWAT Kats (or is related to them) in one way or another. 5. About a SWAT Kats RPG character. Take note of the last one. I've really been letting people go wild with their characters' RPG stories. Yes, they're nice -- I have one (it's not officially on the archive -- yet). Yes, I want them. But they could really use the SWAT Kats in them! 4. MARY-SUES I am getting *way* too many of these. ALL AUTHORS PLEASE READ THE SPECIFIED EXCERPT LISTED IN THE ARCHIVE NOTES! I don't want to point claws at anyone, but some of you should really take the hint. I'm not saying to stop writing; I'm just saying that you should be warned your chosen genre of Mary-Suism isn't very popular and maybe a few alterations in your gameplans could change that. I won't go into what *exactly* Mary-Sues are, but let's say in general a Mary-Sue character is : 1) a new character created by the author (often bearing their own name or web name) 2) PERFECT IN EVERY WAY! 3) usually female 4) usually in bed/love with the author's favorite show character by the end of the story 5) if not 4, then usually related to the author's favorite show character READ THE EXCERPT, PLEASE! 5. STEALING FROM EACH OTHER Just don't do it. If you're going to use a certain situation universe created by another author, please ASK THEM, then acknowledge them in your introduction. Example : a *lot* of people have been choosing to use Jade Callan's "T-Bone and Felina are in love" universe for their own fan fiction. Great, but ask! Then mention how that universe is set up in your intro so it doesn't confuse peope who've actually never read Jade's stuff (all two of you...). On a side note, who *really* wants a "Watcher Files" sequel? I've been getting a lot of requests... e-mail me privately at Thanks for your time! _______________________________________________________ Get Private Web-Based Email Free http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: "Klawz _" Date: Thu, 10 Jul 1997 20:50:05 PDT Subject: TIME SLOTS! There are also other groups. Like the alt. one. Surely everyone out on the list knows at least one other person who likes the SWAT Kats...but doesn't have computer access. If we feed information to those with computer access, who print it out for those without it we have ourselves a bigger group. And besides, like somekat out there said, one thing at a time. A lot of work is waiting for us - first we must create a game script, then decide about type of game (RPG, dungeon, doomlike...), then make a lot of scene arts (hey - artists - where are you?) and finally write a program. If you want to use voices, scenes from SK etc, I think there will be a problem with copyrights and creators of SK show. Writable CD isn't so good resolution because it isn't so safe for data etc. This all means huge cooperation between each other - fans, programmers, artists... I welcome all your opinions and suggestions about this problem. A notice for Anne Packrat - a simulator of SNES is (maybe) a resolution of my problem but I prefer clean PC environment because any software simulator doesn't resolve a problem definitely (I mean software compatibility, problems with hardware and so on). Hm. Successful. Isn't it?" -Max Headroom Hello Darking, It's great you're a programmer and even you can write programs in C. I know a bit about C (my favourite program language is 8-bit assembler for one-chip computers (intel 8052, 8048...) and favourite things are computers) but I think this is great language. I have only one reminder - I'm sure some of us don't have so strong computer to launch the Quake. I know a minimum for this game is Pentium 100 with 16 MB RAM and 4X CDROM... If you want to make a patch level for all people with usual kind of computer I recommend to use a level editor for DOOM or for Duke Nukem 3D. I think those games are launchable on nearly all types of computer (mainly DOOM - the great and first network 3D game...). Else I played Quake in network and alone and I was dedicated. Now I'd like to write something about why I prefer two types of level editor - DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D. I know there are problems with textures in DOOM level editor - at least I builded some levels for network fights with my friends and I had problems with wall textures. I was not able to download other textures from my archives into this editor and use them - for example. After all I think a patch DOOM level is possible for most of us. There's one big problem - you can't change gun types so there are only those seven guns like in DOOM. But it is simple and when you have a version for MS Windows the work with that program is very comfortable and fast. I had that one for Win (I don't already know the name ... I'm too old ;-) ) and I was very satisfied. An editor for DN3D is more accomplished. You can use any texture you want, define any type of gun you want etc. The used graphics engine is the same like the Duke's one. Typical example of game created by this editor is the Redneck Rampage from Xatrix Entertainment. There are used great textures and things and the global feeling from the "reality" in levels of the R.R. is very well. I recommend you to download the demo or buy legal game. I can shortly say in this editor you're free and you can make everything as you want... Of course there are lots of editors - some are simple, some are complicated but I think this is the best resolution... I have one version from DN3D CD Rom but I can't do anything with this one because it always crashes at my videocard (crud... :-(( ) so I'm not able to give more information about this editor. But it must be great because I saw one street from Prague created in this editor I have and that street was nearly perfect - all historical houses, trams, buses... So I think it's a base of my opinion. I hope this tittle-tattle is intelligible to you. If you're interested in area of making levels please write me about your experiences. I welcome all your letters. Thanks for your interest. MARY-SUES >Put a little cartoon "Mary Sue Icon" next to the story? Doing a rating system is a difficult issue, because it makes it even scarier to submit stories. But what if the first story you read is one by Ryan (as we've said before)? As soon as I get my new (used) computer running, it'll be quicker to read things through netscape, so maybe I can start getting caught up with the stories. But which do I read first? OTOH, if there's a "DJ's Picks" of >good stories, my feelings get hurt if my story doesn't make it. Maybe an *edited* "Reader's Comments" section linked with the story? MY FEELINGS TOWARDS REVIEWS: 1. Why they are good: They warn the reader of potential disturbing pieces or not suitable for children stuff. 2. Why they are bad: They offend the authors if the reviews are bad. Those authors may not write more. When those authors get better, they may not write more. A great loss to all of us. MY REVIEWS: I have two kinds of reviews on the archive. 1. Ratings -- R and NC-17, with various warning attached. These are good. 2. "Archive Host Recommendations" I made these to really steer people towards some works I think really stand out so people can stop e-mailing me and asking me to do that over e-mail. After all, there are a ton of stories now and it's getting hard to wade through them. However, I don't want to offend authors who didn't get recommendations. Anything to deter authors from writing is BAD. I'm thinking about removing them altogether, but I need feedback. THE DEAL WITH MARY-SUES: I want people to stop writing them. On the other hand, I want people to keep writing for the archive. And some of the authors on the archive are VERY sensetive, especially to *my* comments. So basically, I can't point a claw at anyone, only just keep announcing TO READ THE @#*! EXCERPT until the right authors read it and get the point. ** >So what's this about a book you wrote? First off, it is known that you can program vehicles into Quake, so we could have a TurboKat (no WO though, the vehicle I saw was one person only). Secondly, someone stated that they would prefer a third person perspective ala Tomb Raider. This is not possible (as far as I know) in Duke 3D, but again, there are patches to do this in Quake. Next, The basic "main character" can be modified to reasonably look like T-Bone and Razor, something, again, that I don't think is possible in Duke 3d. Note: this is not a Duke vs. Quake rant. I think Duke and Quake are okay games, but in terms of modifiability, Quake is much better. I've noticed that when the moon is close to the horizon, it fills up a really good section of the sky and diminishes as it rises higher. My best guess is an illusion caused by atmosphere... especially since when the moon is low and huge, it tends to be a different color. Yellow to orange, usually. I admit, I haven't noticed the size of the moon in SK... guess I should watch some more. :) - -Yvonne Pawtowski __/^-^\__ *Miya!* ypawtows@pop.halcyon.com Resident Catbunny ------------------------------ End of kats-digest V1 #256 **************************
