I recall a couple land-speed records back in the 60's were set by jet-cars built mostly from fighter plane parts scrounged out of junkyards. One or two workable planes have been built this way. Most noteable case: Somebody in the U.S. purchased an old F-104 Starfire interceptor from the AIr Force. The military types were selling it for display purposes only, as they didn't want civillians flying current-grade fighters (the F-104 was still in use at the time), so they cut up all the internal wing spars before selling it. THe plane couldn't fly. The purchaser then went north to Canada, found a crashed F-104 in a junkyard, and salvaged the wing spars. Put them into his "new" plane, and took off in it. Shortly afterwards, he killed himself by plowing a rather deep hole in the ground with the plane. F-104's are _very_ difficult to fly. As a result of this, the U.S. military stopped selling old jets in _any_ form to civilians. I think they either keep the old ones in guarded military "mothball" yards, or crush them into unrecognizeable pieces. THey're deliberately _trying_ to make sure that nobody can scrounge up enough parts to make a workable plane. Can't say that I blame them- in the current world, if somebody scavanged 100 wrecked F-4's and then killed himself with the result, the family would probably sue the Air Force for "allowing" the idiot to go up in a jet. This dosen't necessarily apply in other countries, of course. I belive you can still purchase a nice MiG from Russia, and fly it off the base yourself. Hmm. Yet _another_ example of "One nut ruining it for everyone", although the "everyone" is a little more limited than usuall. :-) Daniel Pawtowski dpawtows@vt.edu ------------------------------ End of kats-digest V1 #87 ************************* ----------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Majordomo file: list 'kats-digest' file 'v01.n088' Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 06:13:43 -0400 (EDT) From: Majordomo@maxie.com To: GateKat@SWATKats.Net -- From: owner-kats-digest To: kats-digest Subject: kats-digest V1 #88 Reply-To: kats Errors-To: owner-kats-digest Precedence: bulk To-Unsubscribe: send the command 'unsubscribe kats-digest' to 'majordomo@maxie.com' kats-digest Friday, 6 December 1996 Volume 01 : Number 088 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mmartin3@richmond.edu (Brother Buford) Date: Thu, 05 Dec 1996 10:16:25 -0500 Subject: SWATKats FTP site I now have my ftp site up and running, although there is not really much there at the moment. No matter who you put Razor together with, someone's gonna have problems with the pairing. My suggestion would be, who would Razor have the relationship with advance the plot the most? If the romance is there just because it looks pretty, you should probably ignore it. If, however, he starts going out with someone, but during a date someone else whom he still has unresolved feeling for gets captured by Dark Kat, then it's very important to the plot. They had several other characters, but I'm drawing a blank on who they were. No, no SWAT Kats. At least, not yet. All of the shirts have "Cartoon Network" labels. > Bottom line? Some of us may have heard rumours to the effect that Hanna-Barbera is poised to disappear and be replaced by "Cartoon Network Animation". Well....sorta. One of the Turnerites said that "Cartoon Network Animation" will actually be a new division set up by Tedco in charge of new production (right Marc?), where the "Hanna-Barbera" div. will deal solely with the "Classic" properties. I think "SwatKats" might fall between the cracks here, but my first impression is that it would be considered "Classic" by virtue of the fact it's no longer in production. I also haven't managed to get time for typing in this full Kats script I have called "Blackout", but now we have yet another script on the way (guess I better get typing) which is actually an early draft of the unfinished episode "Curse of Kataluna". "Blackout" was an unused script that became the genesis for Glenn Leopold's first season closer "Katastrophe", where this "Kataluna" script concerns a certain kat-vamp's affects on Commander Feral. I've had the time to read a bit of "Blackout" while typing it for someone, and I think everyone will get a kick out of it. Leaving these things in script format also gives you a good indication of how the storyboard artist takes his cues and helps transform it into a completed episode. It's kinda cool; you can actually picture the ep playing in your head as you read it....just as you can see the Turner execs playing *with* your head 'cuz you can't turn on the *TV* and see it. ------------------------------ From: Razor610@aol.com Date: Sat, 14 Dec 1996 20:48:22 -0500 (EST) Subject: web site Just to let everyone know- I finally made my own home page. One unmade episode called "Coldwar" (see my fanfic site for premise) did feature a snowstorm, but that was only because Rex Shard got turned into a giant snowkat and made the whole city freeze down. Still, if you read the premise, it says the SWAT Kats pulled out their deep-freeze snowjets, indicating they were used to snow. Let's not forget that this is a TV show that we're talking about, and even if it weren't, there would be much objection. Societies have rules for reasons of social order too. Besides, another thing to consider is that cats were originally desert animals, and even today, in their often subarctic domesticated world, cats still prefer hot temperatures, as much as 40c. Dana, please don't edit this--it needs to be said. I CAN'T READ .DOC FILES! STOP SENDING THEM TO ME! I've gotten 6 .doc submissions in the last week, some from people who specifically said beforehand that they wouldn't. So I want to clear something up: 1. What is a .doc file? It's a file will the extension .doc on the end, and from what I can tell was written in Microsoft Word. 2. Why can't you (me--DJ) read them? I don't have Microsoft Word. The line, "So just go get it" is not working either, because if you have a Mac version and I have an IBM computer with an IBM version the file would not transfer properly anyway. I have a special pogram called UltraEdit, that I got solely so I could read odd files and word wrap them for the archive, and even UE will *not* read .doc files 3. How can I change my .doc file to .txt? When you hit "save as" (or, if you're saving for the first time, just "save"), it will have a little indicator on the type of file you are saving as. You must click on it, and choose "text file." When you enter the name of your file to be saved, also write name.txt (with 'name' being the name of your file) so it gets saved in text format, *and* I can open it later as a .txt file without changing the ending myself. 4. If I send you a .doc after reading this message, will you kill me? Most likely. I don't want to be mean, but this is something I have to put my foot down on, because getting repeated submissions of files I can't read is frustrating, especially when the archive update is the next day and that person only checks and sends e-mail once a week. If you contradict the show at any time, you must explain it or mention it in the story or your introduction. 2. If Jake and Chance are in anything other than flight suits, their names are Jake and Chance. If they *are* in flight suits, their names are T-Bone and Razor. You *cannot* randomly switch between alter names within one scene because you're looking for a synonym for 'T-Bone' because it's the third time you've used his name in the paragraph. I'll also have to go back and check to see if the episode list is the version from Animato, or is an earlier one (from _Toon_ Magazine). (Warner's has greenlighted a new series for '98, but it isn't Kats, and to my knowledge, there's been no high-level discussions concerning renewing the program within the Warners' fold whatsoever. Their "Road Rovers" isn't exactly doing boffo box-office, but it isn't buried in the backyard either - so perhaps being able to label it 'successful' might open the door to a SwatKats revival. There's already considerable cross-merchandising going on concerning Warner-HB merchandise, and that might yet extend to the programming end of things. As one of their producers recently lamented over there: "we're short of nothing save imaginative executives". 'Nuff said.) ------------------------------ From: "quadraa@usa.net" Date: Tue, 26 Dec 1995 11:12:44 +0300 Subject: .avi's...
