William Hanna (of Hanna-Barbera) has died From: "whitestorm (E-mail)" ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 1 Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 19:52:04 -0700 From: "whitestorm (E-mail)" Subject: William Hanna (of Hanna-Barbera) has died I get the digest, so someone may have posted this already. If so, I apologize. Hanna-Barbera produced SWAT Kats, so I thought I would send this to the list. Cartoon pioneer William Hanna dead at 90 Animation pioneer William Hanna, who with partner Joseph Barbera created such endeared cartoon characters as Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear and Tom and Jerry, died today at age 90, a spokeswoman said. Hanna died at his suburban North Hollywood home with Violet, his wife of 65 years, at his side, said Sarah Carragher, director of publicity at Warner Bros., which now owns the Hanna-Barbera Studios. The cause of death was not known, but Hanna had been in declining health for the last few years, Carragher said. Hanna and Barbera began their collaboration in 1937 at MGM, where they created the Tom and Jerry series of animated shorts, seven of which received Academy Awards. While at MGM, the pair broke new ground by mixing their animated cat and mouse buddies with live action stars such as Gene Kelly in "Anchors Aweigh" and Esther Williams in "Dangerous when Wet." The two formed Hanna-Barbera Studios in 1957 and produced more than 3,000 animated half-hour television shows. Their "Huckleberry Hound" show won the first Emmy Award given to an animated series. Hanna is survived by his wife, a son and daughter, and seven grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were pending. Topics in this digest: 1. Strike's SK Zone and Fan Art Page will be locked down on June 1 From: "whitestorm (E-mail)" ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 1 Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 19:07:30 -0700 From: "whitestorm (E-mail)" Subject: Strike's SK Zone and Fan Art Page will be locked down on June 1 Firstly, I'm going to apologize to y'all for uploading another site-related post to the list, but it seems like the most effective method of reaching the most SK fans. Secondly, it has become clear to me that the fandom, while still large, has become less active. This is probably due to a variety of reasons, but the need for a comprehensive page like SK Zone isn't quite so great anymore. When SK Zone was first created, there were only 3 other fan sites: The FanFic Page, Ryan Kelley's page, and rat.org. But now there are a ton of smaller fan sites about SK that are still growing and changing. I believe that SK Zone and the Fan Art Page have achieved what I created them to do. The Fan Art page as a large, centralized collection of SK fan art and fan artists (and picked up some other stuff along the way.) Not the -only-, but that was never my intention. Just as a large starting point. SK Zone was meant to be the largest, most comprehensive SK media site, which IMHO, it has definitely become. SK Zone is home to many different types of files - screen grabs, development documents, video files, etc... SK Zone surpassed that mark a long time ago. But I've begun to realize that there isn't that much more material out there for SK Zone to host, unless I wanted to add streaming video of the episodes - which is conceivably a good idea, and certainly possible, but would put strains on the site's bandwidth.... and which other SK fans are already doing. (Cassandro/Servus, I believe.) I haven't had anything really new to put on SK Zone in a while, aside from a video file here and there. I began the "Play!" section in an effort to make SK Zone into a feedback/community gathering spot, but that simply didn't happen. I get a lot of hits to SK Zone, but it seems not much interest. As far as the Fan Art Page goes, I've received less and less fan art as updates go by. This is probably partially due to my long intervals between updates (time and IRL constraints,) but also because many of the previously prolific artists stopped drawng SK, or simply prefer to host the art on their own pages. As a result, I only receive a few dozen images from the same 3 or 4 artists each update. Since my updates are unpredictable and infrequent, they're probably better served if they make their own page to display their art, instead of waiting for SKFA Page to update. So here is the decision I have reached: SK Zone and the Fan Art Page's final updates will be finished on June 1st. The pages WILL NOT be removed- but from June 1st on, they will be presented "As Is", and no further updates will be made. (With the exclusion of the RPG pages, which are going strong.) I have also decided not to relinquish control of SK Zone or the SKFA Page to another webmaster. Maybe I'm being selfish, but I created them both from nothing many years ago, and I just can't bear to see them under anyone else's control. There are other SK fan art pages out there - the few people who still submit fan art will find a good home in those (and making their own page is also a good idea, for a lot of reasons.) I will still retain "copyright" on the pages - just because SK Zone and the SKFA page aren't being updated doesn't mean it's okay to plunder their contents for your own pages. (IE, spending a weekend manually downloading all the fan art and reconstructing the FA Page for yourself- please don't do that.) Any CYOAs, site links, media files, or fan art that people wish to submit to SK Zone or the FA Page must be sent to me before May 1st, one month before the final update on June 1. This allows me time to finalize my site organization, and to generally do everything at a more leisurely pace, correcting any mistakes before everything's uploaded. Anywho, thanks to everyone who has helped me with SK Zone or submitted files or fan art - SK Zone and the SKFA page would have been nothing without contributions. And thanks to all its visitors for making it a successful site. ~Strike www.whitestorm.com "We're going to have the best-educated American people in the world." -- Dan Quayle ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Your use of Yahoo! However, I always ran into problems with it that made it not worth my while (to be honest.) The first problem is that it would require a re-scripting of the entire fan art page, probably with a language I'm not familiar with. That would involve no small amount of stress and time on my part; of which I have too much and too little already. The second is that some artists don't have their own webspace, or don't care to organize their site to have SK art on it, or with an SK-only section. (And some of them, I don't even know where the artists are anymore.) Those that do have webspace should have links to their sites, from their index on the FA Page. It would also require work on the part of just about every artist on the FA page, and I'm not sure I want to email everyone and say, "hey, this is how it's gonna be from now on, so do it." And I'm not entirely sure if I really want to spread everything around all over the internet - as it is, if there's a problem with a section of the site, I can find it out and fix it myself, without having to track down an artist and ask them why their page isn't there anymore. The third arises if I allow people to upload directly to whitestorm.com - I can't do that easily, because my webhosts charge me for each FTP user I add, and I don't trust a "catch-all" password enough- anyone would be able to get into anyone else's art files and mess with them. I'm not trying to be a Side7 or a VCL, just a site with a bunch of SK art. Either way it would mean that I lose some control over the content of the site. Every single user-policed art site out there has 'content violations' up the yahoo. I'd have to be constantly checking everyone's pages to make sure they're really sticking to the "SK only" guidelines. Not enough people have been sending in SK art lately for me to spend so much effort redesigning the Fan Art page for it. I'll be the first to admit that a user-updated, dynamic format is the best choice, but I can't really balance the pros with the cons for the FA Page. That doesn't mean I'm closed to the idea, but I don't think I'm going to do it until I can get some of those problems solved. We may be able to work out a balance of both - static pages for those who want it (or those I can't get ahold of anymore,) and dynamic ones for those who want to keep uploading stuff and have their own webspace. That's a lot for my brain to think about right now, though, so I'll move on to Danny's suggestion.... > From: Danny Palic > The closest thing I could find is "My Image gallery" > http://tangledhelix.com/software/mig/ > > It requires PHP3 or PHP4, wich is freely available for > virtually every OS around, and it is GNU too :) I took a look at that site - I haven't downloaded the program and tested it, but from what it looks like, everyone who wants to have a dynamic page would have to install that program onto their own sites. It makes no mention of offsite directories. Also, it won't automatically generate thumbnails unless they write a PERL script to make it do so. whitestorm is a Linux system, and it's already enabled to run PHP commands. I'll see if I can find time this weekend to mess with the program, but if it won't do offsite directories, then I won't be able to use it. Thanks for sending the link, though... it might work out, if it's fast and simple and will work offsite. (May also be a problem if it maps out their whole site, and not just the SK sections.) ~Strike www.whitestorm.com "We're going to have the best-educated American people in the world." -- Dan Quayle ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Your use of Yahoo!
