This happened to me several times with Geocities and Fortunecities. It was a big part of my decision to pay for my own webspace - I can do whatever I want there, without fear of having my site deleted due to some technical computer's whim. I can only give you advice based on my own experience. The first time a part of my site was deleted, it was because they said I had pornography on my site. This was with Fortunecity. Evidently the computer had gotten my account and another person's account confused. All I could do was send an e-mail with a protest, and they acknowledged the error. Unfortunately, they couldn't give my site back, or the data on it. So I had to apply for a new account (with a new e-mail address) and re-upload everything. Thank God I had backups. The other two times were by Geocities, who I've come to personally hate. Both times, they said the same thing that they're telling you - that I was using it as a "storage space" for files from another site. Technically, this was partially true. My site was so large that I had to break up the areas into different accounts - but I made sure that all relevant files were on the same account as their directory HTML files. So the only cross-account links that I had were between HTML pages - "click here to go to the fan art page", things like that. Since they were the same things as links to any other sites. I sent them e-mails, protesting the gateway-thing. They got into my old account and explained to me that I had several files in my directory that weren't linked to anything else in my account, but still had several individual hits logged. When their TOS computer scanned those, or something, it read them as "hidden" files - files which could conceivably be linked to from an off-Geocities site. (I believe at the time that "hidden files" were illegal to have on your site. I don't know if they still are. It would seem so.) I tried to explain to them that "hidden" was not the same as "currently unused" or "under construction"... they believed me the first time, and unlocked my site. The second time (on a different account), they refused- which was when I called a web hosting company and signed up there. So I suppose if the things for your HTML class weren't really linked to anything else, and you had a lot of unrelated files on your site that weren't linked to anything, their computer could have seen them as offsite-link "stored" files and gone ahead and put a lock on your account. Geocities should still have your site's information... they don't delete the site right away like Fortunecity does. (Or at least, they didn't used to.) I know that e-mail takes a long time, but they don't provide a phone number or anything faster. So I'd reccommend sending an e-mail to their customer service people, the account maintenance people, and your community leader- one of them is bound to be willing to help you out. Being friendly and explaining the situation usually helps. Most of the "weeding out" is done by a computer - so the actual humans seem to be pretty understanding when you complain to them. Once you get your site back, if you can, be sure to download everything from your site onto your hard drive and onto a floppy disk. Find a better free webhost neighborhood that isn't quite such a Content Nazi and won't arbitrarily delete your site. I reccommend Xoom- it's really the best one out there. I don't reccommend Geocities to anyone. Once you have your stuff off of the GC site, cancel your account. There's an area on that form where you can choose a reason why you're closing it, and also a space to write comments.... use this space creatively! Don't be shy about copying it and sending it to customer service, and anyone else you so desire. Hopefully the CS people will be willing to help you out. But if you do visit SK Zone, this is a post you should read. I'm sure that the people that visit SK Zone have noticed that I haven't updated since early January. There are a lot of reasons for this, but there are two main ones. The first one is that a lot of things in my life have kept me very busy, and I haven't had time to work on an update at all. The second is that I've begun to lose interest in keeping up SK Zone. I don't intend to give it away or shut it down, but I do need to wrap some of it up and get most of it off my "to do" list. So here's what I'm going to do. If anyone has any comments or suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them. Just be aware that I don't intend to change my main plan. If anything suggested sounds like it will take me a large amount of extra time to do, I may not do it. I'm going to be upgrading my server to 1000 megs (one gigabyte.) This should be done within a few weeks. Once that's done, I'll have enough room to upload quite a few things that I've had on ZIP disks, but haven't uploaded due to lack of space. This will include many screenshots (more than 100, I'm not sure exactly how many), some animator drawings if I still have them, everything from Cartoon Network's "Dept. of Cartoons" site- except the interface, and the original mpeg and avi versions of the movie files. Any SK file I find in my possession will be uploaded to the site. Desktop icons, wallpaper, and I'm sure I have some more stuff. Anyone who has files that they'd like uploaded should let me know within a few weeks, so I can get ready for it. I'm hoping to get most of this done in one large update. I'm also going to make available my anonymous FTP directory for uploading. I'll review the files and move them to someplace appropriate (movie files to the movie directory, etc.) I know that few people send me files, but hopefully by making it more convenient to upload them, people will send more. Heh. FAN ART - this is going to be the big change. I honestly don't have the time to update this site anymore. Even small updates take me several days to do. My server isn't capable of self-upload scripts (like they have on sites like VCL). Even if it were, the SK FA page has become a furry art site, which wasn't my original intention. I'll upload most of the art I've received up to this point. After this point, I'm going to restrict entries to only SWAT Kats fan art. No more fanfic-related art, no more RPG related art. Only art featuring characters/stuff from the TV show as their central theme. This should cut way down on the amount of work I have to do for this site. On a normal update, I'll get more than fifty pics. I'm lucky if 3 SWAT Kats pics are submitted. Most of them are original characters and other unrelated stuff. I do intend to keep the RPG area and links areas regularly updated. If I receive new files, the S-Files section will be updated. (Stuff from the anonymous ftp directory or through email, and the old stuff I have on my ZIP disks.) The CYOAs will be added each time a new one is written. So overall, the only major changes I'm making are that I won't be actively looking for new SK files anymore, and that the only fan art I'm accepting is actual SWAT Kats fan art. I won't be removing any old files. So um... yep. I probably rambled a bit, but I'm just letting everyone know of my intentions with SK Zone.
