What did you do? Well, David, for some of us, it's not 2000 yet. We've still got 4-5 hours left. Anyway, I don't know what I'll be doing tonight. Talking to friends, playing video games, watching movies, etc. Maybe watch the ball drop in Times Square on TV. We probably won't have any Y2K problems. The other parts of the world are in 2000 already and they're not having any problems. So your guess is as good as mine. Happy New Year! Not that I don't mind a few off-topic posts once in awhile (ie: what you did for NY's)... but arguing which year is the millenium is silly and completely off-topic. According to different people, the "Real" one was back in '86, or '88, or '96, or this year, or next year, or three years from now. Does anyone have any sort of SK topic for the list? If you look at newspapers from a century ago, you'll read that they recorded the new century (correctly) beginning in 1901 and 1900. This 0-9 crap started only with computers and digital readouts. As I said, read the New York Times in December of 1900 and January of 1901, available on microfilm in your library, and see for yourself when this century started (Hint: 1 Jan 1901, not 1900). Maybe more people were smarter then than they are now. It must be true, because it's amazing how many idiots, and smart people who should know better, foolishly think that the new millennium started two days ago. Remember, for your argument to be correct, there had to have been a Year 0. Of course there wasn't one. I look forward to celebrating the REAL start of the new millennium, on January 1, 2001! Until then, I'm dropping this. My apologies for getting a bit too upset about when the millennium really starts. Because ultimately who cares? The world didn't end two days ago, nor will it end 364 days from now. And besides, it's just Earth time, not Kat time! So, speculatively, where in relation to the equivalent of the Year 2000 would you say the Kat world is? State your assumptions, and back up your points. You have one hour to complete your exam! ;-) Cheers, Ed Tomorrow I'm off to Fort Knox again, flying in one of those tiny little regional jets that are about as close to flying in something like the TurboKat I'll ever get. For those of you who have Strike's SWAT Kats Second Season Opener in AVI format NOT RealPlayer format , look VERY VERY closely at frame # 248*. You will see that it is a shot of Razor swinging on his helmet. For those of you who don't have the AVI file, tape the season opener , and watch VERY VERY closely between frame numbers #246 - #250. The Screw up is that Razor has a blue ear instead of a carmel one. I have proof on my site : follow this link: http://blackrazor11.iwarp.com/blueear.jpg * To do so , open the opener via Windows Media Player (c:\windows\mplayer.exe) Set up Media Player to view in frames (click 'Scale' then choose 'Frames') And fast foward by moving the slider to frame # 248. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Message: 2 Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 23:54:55 PST From: "David Noble" Subject: Re: Animator Screw-Up! >The Screw up is that Razor has a blue ear instead of a carmel one. > >I have proof on my site : follow this link: >http://blackrazor11.iwarp.com/blueear.jpg I went to this address and it said I didn't have access. Everything was offline for a few days, and parts of their system are still having problems. They said that FTP should have been up again, but mine doesn't work. I've tried calling, but their help lines have been busy every day (even at times like 4am) since New Years. Their help email services were wiped out and have only just gotten them back online... after being broken into by a hacker... THAT was interesting to see when I went there looking for a phone number... so I've sent them a request and hopefully they'll get my FTP access fixed so I can update my site. So anyway. I'm just kind of waiting now. (And not very patiently, either.... thank goodness I haven't sent them the check yet... no way I'm paying for this!) ~Strike www.whitestorm.com "I was known as the chief grave robber of my state." --Dan Quayle _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Message: 6 Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 07:23:12 -0700 From: "Strike" Subject: Re: Mostly related... Actually it's Steve Case... I'd hate for them to become the SWAT Macs.. ;) I'd also hate to see AOL require you to sign up for their service in order to get any "official" stuff like you can on cartoonnetwork.com. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but from what I understand, AOL & Time-Warner are merging (provided that the Federal Trade Commission approves it) rather than being bought outright by AOL. When I saw the press conference, Ted Turner was on stage along with the CEO of T-W, Steve Case, & some other people. I'm not sure Ted has lost all connections with the company. Why would he be on stage if he had been pushed out? Don't get me wrong... I'd love to see them renew SK! Let's just not go overboard like we did when Time-Warner bought up Turner Broadcasting. Heck, I'd like to see all the episodes released on DVD... When I get proper software for MPEG comression I can do so. However even those $1999 DVD-Rom Burner probably canīt burn the real DVD Roms. Now, can the sound from the rom be brought into midi format? It's already in the computer, so that much is done. However, I have no clue what format it exists in within a rom, nor do I even know how to look. But, should anyone know if that would be useful in getting a midi, speak up. Just >curious. I mean we DO want SK back right??? > >Felicia > >Heya Felicia. Fortress here. I'm kinda the one who got this ball rolling but I just haven't had time to jot down my thoughts due a lot of RL crap going on right now. I wanted to go into more detail on creating a form letter each of us could send to whomever we pick as our focal point, but the main points are listed below. 1) Orginal Swat Kat cartoon on DVD with perhaps music segments by themselves and if their still available deleted scenes/drawings. Maybe outtakes. Heck, if their going to put Wild Wild West on DVD and charge 17.95 for it, imagine what they could charge for something good! 2) New SK Cartoons, to be shown on Cartoon Network as part of the Friday Cartoon Cartoon block. Not only would the new show be able to be surrounded by other shows that have a good following, but it would give some extra oomph to CN's lineup, somthing lacking in their orginal programing with the possible exception of Power Puff girls, and that's not what I call a dedicated action cartoon. 3) Have the orginal writers (if available) create scripts. They did a great job the first time so why not now? Maybe ask some well known sci-fi/fantasy writers for stuff. I would love to see what Peter David would do personally. 3) Explain to them that with animation being though a lot more as an art and media forum nowadays a well done cartoon with a target audience greater than 6 would thrive. Look at Simpsons, Beast Wars/Beast Machines, as well as the popularity of the cartoon Network shows themselves. Not everyone who watches cartoons is 8 years old and sleeping in footed pj's. Not that I'm suggesting X-Rated Swat Kats (McFarlane's Spawn on HBO ring a bell?) but something more than just fluff and fold for kids. 4) And the main point is that we are all adults and we like the show. We have a high degree of spendable income for related merchandise (done correctly that is) and if the show was the higest rated in the 95-95 catagory of syndicated shows, why not give it another change in an environment where animation is no longer though of as 'kids stuff'? If nothing else, tack on the poster that was on the group a few weeks ago and REMIND THEM of it's success. Besides, look how miserable Friday's tv line up is now. They toss a great cartoon on a name brand channel and poof!--ratings out the wazoo. All we want is a good show back on the air. If they do it right, they'll have the ratings to back up the production. That's all my main points really group. Please feel free to add to this as I'm sure I've left an important aspect out. I would love to see what Peter David would do personally.<< Ooooh, I wish! That would be great! But um, remember that there was a pretty bad script that some say killed the show in the first place (don't ask me the origin of the "Curse of Kataluna" theory... you probably heard it already anyway). Also, if it wasn't that script that killed it, what did? There were some awkward paradigmatic shuffles in the second season - would it pick up where that left off? Would anyone enjoy that at all? What about our own visions of SK - I mean, say that they... brought in a girlfriend for Jake. Well that would kill the ratings of a lot of us katfans, now wouldn't it? Yes I'd like to see what Peter David would do. But he's more of a novelist... What is it that we want? The SWAT Kats to come back so that we could see our stories on the screen? So we really think that if they make new episodes, that they'll be enjoyable? It would be like having another person's fics shoved down your throat.... Not that I'm suggesting X-Rated Swat Kats (McFarlane's Spawn on HBO ring a bell?) but something more than just fluff and fold for kids.<< Well I'm going to point this out, and I hope no one hates me (any more?) for it, but we liked it WHEN it was a kids show - and a lot of us started when we were kids. (Myself, for one. I make it no secret, I started with SK in high school.) Plus, I think that the advertisers know this already, as do the producers, the scriptwriters, the animators... They're Hollywood. They knew this before we did. The demographics for SWAT Kats anyway aren't set at eight anyway... And yeah, maybe we all would like to see the characters get together... but then, what happens after? We either have a dead show or a soap. Anyone keeping up with X Files lately? >>4) And the main point is that we are all adults and we like the show. We have a high degree of spendable income for related merchandise (done correctly that is) and if the show was the higest rated in the 95-95 catagory of syndicated shows, why not give it another change in an environment where animation is no longer though of as 'kids stuff'? They toss a great cartoon on a name brand channel and poof!--ratings out the wazoo. All we want is a good show back on the air. If they do it right, they'll have the ratings to back up the production.<< Actually, there are a lot of katfans who aren't adults. And it's not our spending that matters, but how much the kid fans can squeeze out of our parents. Look at Pokemon - heck, most every show that's popular. DO we want to be THAT commercial? These guys get tons and tons of new ideas every day. Some of these are great! But that means that they aren't desperate. They don't care how good the show is. They ask: will it sell? What do you have to show us? And in truth, what do we have to show them? If we really want SK back - and I think that we do - we need to scrap all our personal SK universes and agree on one, very show-ish, general-consensus-approveable universe. Then we need to do the scripts and some sketches and promos and pitch this like all other shows have to be pitched. And we might get rejected! But the truth is that if we can pitch ourselves, and we are accepted, all of the main points that Fortress put out (and they were all very nice points) can then be achieved. But for now, the little petition/letterwrite idea is all right. I'm just not very optimistic about its chances - or those of my own proposal above. If ONLY we had the time... Well that's about all I have to say... if I think of any more I'll let you all know. That is, if you can stand it... LOL. What say you all?!! And then - what kind of advertising >would they use? It almost makes me wish that I was an ad exec, because that's >who they listen to.. The videos never sold that well, because SK never really had a "height of popularity" period. It was a case of Turner botching the show's marketing and introduction. As most of you are aware, a significant portion of the revenue from animated series comes from licensed merchandise. SK was introduced without any meaningful licensing program, and later the lack of licensees was one of the (bogus) justifications for killing it. The self-fulfilling prophecy approach. I remember being aware of the Kats, but only tooning in after seeing an ad in Animation magazine (after the show was declining already). I was floored and instantly hooked, and have been since. Turner has proven to be a master at mismanaging properties. Look at the massive push for the new Jonny Quest, which tanked, and the poor promotion of the wonderful film "Cats Don't Dance". >>>2) New SK Cartoons, to be shown on Cartoon Network as part of the Friday >Cartoon Cartoon block. SK had great animation, gritty scripts, realistic or nearly so action, and complex, believable characters. The nearest thing comparable has been the Batman stuff on FOX, which in turn harks back to the Fleischer Superman and similar oldies. >What is it that we want? I know those who are animation fans, or furries, or SF/fantasy fans (or all of the above!) don't have a problem with this, but a large part of the potential audience sees "funny animals = for kids only". I see this myself in getting people to watch Cats Don't Dance. And it's not our >spending that matters, but how much the kid fans can squeeze out of our >parents. Look at Pokemon - heck, most every show that's popular. DO we want >to be THAT commercial? Unfortunately licensing is a fact of life in entertainment today. I definitely don't want to see a Pokemon-style situation ($12 for a handful of trading cards??), but for a show to succeed there has to be at least _some_ revenue coming into the studio from licensing. >These guys get tons and tons of new ideas every day. You'd have to have good results with test audiences of the appropriate age group - and sadly that is well below the age of most on this list. You'd definitely need some kind of firm licensing program, rather than the pathetic one they had last time. As in years past, I expect to be at the Licensing Expo in June, and I'll try to ask the Time-Warner cretins about the Kats, but there hasn't even been a sell sheet in years :-( I'll let you all know the (likely negative) results. >Well that's about all I have to say... if I think of any more I'll let you all >know.
